Dr James FitzGerald

BSc MBBS MSc MPH DHP ADHP MRCPsych

I am a psychiatrist and psychotherapist working with individuals affected by anxiety, grief, depression, complex emotional needs, and interpersonal difficulties. My main clinical role is as a psychiatrist in the older adult mental health service at the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS foundation Trust (CPFT) where I see patients both for psychotherapy and psychiatric assessments and management. I co-founded the University of Cambridge Medical School Balint Group Scheme as well as co-founded the Cambridge Psychodynamic Research and Innovation Group. I am involved with the development of the CPFT virtual psychotherapy service as well as the older people’s complex emotional needs (OPCEN) pathway. My research and teaching interests are psychodynamic psychiatry, patients with complex emotional needs and staff support. I am also training to be a psychoanalyst with the Society of Analytical Psychology (SAP) in London.

I am registered with the general medical council (GMC) and the general hypnotherapy register (GHR).

My approach is predominantly psychodynamic and is influenced by Carl Gustav Jung, Jacques Lacan, Melanie Klein and Sigmund Freud. I offer short term or open-ended work which includes brief hypnotherapy, analytical hypnotherapy and psychodynamic oriented psychotherapy.
